Mythical creatures with the quirkiest of characteristics delight as flora and fauna are given an artistic makeover through lights, music and special effects. The inhabitants connect to their environment through vibration, rhythm and beat.

The Experience

Understory takes you on a stroll through the rainforest like no other. The elements of earth, fire, air and water have been reworked and re-brushed illuminating how life and art are intrinsically intertwined. Experience 28,000 metres of pixel lights illuminating South Bank's rainforest in a never-before-seen spectacle.

What is Understory?

Understory is an immersive lighting experience hosted at South Bank’s Rainforest Walk, which brings to life a fantasy world of nature and mythical creatures. State-of-the-art lighting, moving image, sound and special effect installations have been used to create this magical experience.

Where is Understory?

Understory is coming to life at South Bank’s Rainforest Walk, in the heart of Brisbane.

How long is the experience?

Understory experience takes approximately 45 minutes from start to finish.

How early do I need to arrive before my session time?

Visitors are encouraged to arrive at Understory at least 15 minutes before their session start time.

How do I get to South Bank?

South Bank is located close to Brisbane’s CBD and is well connected by bus, train and ferry services. To plan your journey to South Bank via public transport, visit the Translink website. If you plan on driving to South Bank, parking is available in the South Bank Car Park and can be pre-booked online.

How do I get to Understory once I am at South Bank?

Entry to Understory is via Rainforest Green, located near the South Bank Piazza. To find your way to Understory, simply follow the arbour towards the Piazza.

Is the experience suitable for young children and infants?

Understory is designed to be enjoyed by children of all ages. The magical experience does include lighting, moving image, sound and special effects, so please consider whether your little ones may be sensitive to this.

Can I take photos and videos at Understory?

Photos and video can be captured during the experience, but no flash is to be used. Professional photography or videography is not permitted.

What happens if it’s raining?

Understory will go ahead in the event of wet weather. For the comfort of visitors, umbrellas will be available to ticket holders to use during the experience if it is raining. If sessions of Understory need to be cancelled due to extreme weather or unforeseen circumstances, all ticket holders will be notified via email or SMS as soon as possible to reschedule.

What happens if a session is cancelled?

Your booking will be automatically refunded, and you will be provided instructions on how to rebook your Understory experience at a later date.

Do I need to purchase a ticket in advance?

Visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance online.

Do I need to purchase a ticket for my infant?

Children under 2 years can enter for free when accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket. Children over the age of 3 years require a ticket.

Do you accept companion cards?

Yes, holders of a government issued companion card can access a free ticket for their companion. Proof of eligibility will be required upon entry to Understory. Tickets can be purchased online here.

Are tickets refundable?

Once purchased, tickets are non-refundable. If you purchased additional Booking Protection, refer to your policy documents from XCover.com. If you are unable to attend the event, you can list your tickets for resale. We recommend Tixel.

Can I reschedule my tickets for another session?

Tickets can be rescheduled for another session for the same ticket type, subject to availability. Please contact info@oztix.com.au for more information.

Can I make a large group booking?

If you are interested in making a booking for a group larger than 20 people, please fill out the group booking form here.

Is Understory wheelchair accessible?

Understory is a wheelchair-friendly event, however, people with mobility and access requirements may require assistance moving through the experience due to changing pathway widths. Access mats will be installed at the entry and exit of Understory to support visitors to move through the grassed areas.

Can I push a stroller through Understory?

Yes, strollers can be pushed through Understory.

Does Understory have strobe lighting or flashing lighting effects?

Yes - strobe lighting and other intense lighting effects are used to create the magical world of Understory. Anyone with a condition involving sensitivity to strobe, flashing or flickering light should consult a medical professional to understand if this event is safe to attend.

Will smoke or haze effects be used?

Yes – smoke and haze will be used to create the magical world of Understory.
